A Celebration of Folk Music - from dance house to world music

In 2023, the Hungarian folk music gala that Müpa Budapest has held since 2008, will once again show the many diverse shadings characteristic of Hungarian folk music, from dance house music to world music productions. The programme for the evening gala includes a wide range of performers, ranging from Branka Básits and Sára Tímár to the Mihály Borbély Band and from Magyar Banda to Kanizsa Csillagai and MORDÁI. Serving as the host for the evening will be Gábor Eredics from the legendary ensemble Vujicsics.

The atmosphere at this two-part show scheduled for the stage of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall will be a hot one, not least of all because these superb performers will be alternating in a dense rotation, each one bringing a slightly different shade from the palette of Hungarian folk music. Opening the show in the first part will be Básits, one of the great talents of the new generation of folk singers, who recently explored the Serbian folk music legacy of Szigetcsép on her first solo album. She will be followed by Sára Tímár, a singer also known from several big-name line-ups, who will be presenting material from her fourth album, Ének a határtalanról ("Song of the Boundless”). Wrapping up the first part will be the band led by Mihály Borbély, one of the greatest wind players in Hungarian ethnojazz. The second part will be launched by MORDÁI, another group that pushes boundaries with folk rock evoking the atmosphere of the pioneers of Hungarian world music from the '70s and '80s that still sounds fresh. Next up will be Magyar Banda, an ensemble that does not shy away from improvisations and effectively emphasises the special features of the music of different regions, followed by what we can expect to be, as usual, a whirlwind of Gypsy music by Kanizsa Csillagai to close out the evening.
