The impacts of the ’60s also extended to traditional genres. For example, in the work of veteran choreographer and dancer Bob Fosse. He fundamentally rewrote the book on theatrical dancing, to the extent that his productions are often credited as a major source of inspiration for performing artists like Michael Jackson. Later on, he took up filmmaking, earning himself an Oscar for Best Director with his second effort, Cabaret, in 1972. All That Jazz won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1979. Fosse’s musical-within-a-film bears not a trace of the innocence of more peaceful decades. Its main protagonist is a choreographer/director (Joe Gideon, played by Roy Scheider) intent on burning all the candles of his life from all possible ends. Rich in autobiographical elements, this is the story of a career related as a dreamlike video sequence. (The other main role belongs to the angel of death – portrayed by Jessica Lange.)
