Introduction by: Stefan Drössler, Director, Filmmuseum Munchen
By 1946, the Soviet Union is nearly ready to land on the moon but the designer of spacecraft, Professor Syedih, is unable to join the crew due to his age. But the elderly scientist doesn’t have to worry because, with the help of his assistant and a young boy, he can set out for the heavens. Already in 1936, Cosmic Travel, one of the last Soviet silent movies, depicted space conditions with a remarkable degree of realism and although – due to the ‘flippancy’ of spacemen escaping on the Moon – it was sidelined for decades, it still counts today as a true sci-fi historical treat.
