Celebrating 130 Years of Cinema / Big Screen Painter – Vértes Marcell / Marcel Vertès 130

Introduction: Galina Torma, Chief researcher, archivist, NFI – Film Archive

The film is an adaptation of the novel on the life of famous French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Despite his noble background, the lonely artist, who was crippled in a childhood accident, discovered his true forte to be capturing figures of the nightlife of Montmartre, which in turn became the stage for his self-destructive life. One night he meets the beautiful prostitute Marie, who finally does not see him as deformed… As well as Zsa Zsa Gábor, the other Hungarian ‘character’ is Marcell Vértes, winner of two Oscars, who evoked the world of late 19th century Parisian nightlife with his costumes and sets, and through his hands the drawings and paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec.
