These urban folk songs, often filled with bitterness, pain and disappointment are currently enjoying a renaissance, but George Dalaras, who is one of Greece’s most popular singers and performers, and has played with a host of stars from Jan Garbarek to Al Di Meola, already fired up a new era of rembetiko in the mid 70s.
