After the war, Mara (Claudia Cardinale) falls in love with Bube (George Chakiris), a partisan fighter forced into hiding in connection with a political assassination. She finds work in Florence and a young man who wants to marry her. But when she learns that Bube has been arrested, her love for him come to the fore, blotting out all other considerations. The film has a stark simplicity that makes it both dramatic and credible. Claudia Cardinale won that year's "Nastro d'Argento" as best leading actress.
