Robert Altman: Nashville (1975) Music Till Death Do Us Part

It’s not easy to navigate the world of country music with Old World ears. Even defining it is no straightforward task, after all, how do Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Nick Cave and Taylor Swift all fit together?  more

    Current events

The genre comprises thousands of different branches. In any case, the history of country music dates back to the launch of the Grand Ole Opry, a radio programme broadcast from Nashville, in 1925. So Nashville is both the centre and the source. The city, filled with the rustic sounds of country, is the setting of this Robert Altman film, one where, behind the music, a dozen personal dramas and twists of fate all intertwine. And to make it even more interesting: the big country gala is also serving as a campaign event for a (fictitious) presidential candidate, and they are looking to recruit popular singers. The ensemble cast features a veritable parade of stars. Adding to the thrills is the fact that some of them are actually real singers and songwriters. It won’t be easy to untangle everything, but it’s worth the effort.
