The String
The stars of this series are the ‘tools' of music: its instruments. Attending children will have the chance to familiarise themselves with these instruments under the guidance of expert musicians. In this half year, we will embark on a journey into the realm of the musical instruments of a classic symphony orchestra. Children who join our expedition will have the chance to learn about the orchestra and its most important instrument groups.
String instruments produce sound when a vibration is caused by playing or plucking on the strings. They help provide the characteristic sound of classical music and the symphony orchestra, and also constitute the largest group in numerical terms, with the violin, viola, cello and double bass. The development of the violin and other string instruments dates back to ancient times. The first ever string instrument was a flexible bow. By adjusting the tautness of the string, the holder was able to create differently pitched sounds. The current shape of the violin emerged in the 15th century and was the result of a long process of evolution. By this time, its form and proportion were so perfect that almost no changes have been made to the violin since.
