Schubert’s ‘Quartet in D Minor’ – which includes a slow movement that adapts the piece’s own song in a variation form – has become the most popular string quartet by today. It is also very likely that this piece has been recorded the most times, and most probably every single string quartet keeps this piece in their repertoire. It is therefore hardly surprising that violinists, violists and cellists who primarily play symphonic music also want to assume their part in this music miracle. The string quartet performed in the second half of the concert, Mendelssohn’s ‘Quartet No. 6 in F Minor’, is the composer’s last major composition. The special feature of this concert is ‘Three Hymns to the Night’ by Austrian conductor and composer Siegmund von Hausegger (1872–1948).
